Coffee Fundraiser

We are hoping to start a new coffee fundraiser in partnership with the El Dorado Roasting Company. El Dorado Roasting Company is a local family-owned and operated handcrafted specialty coffee roaster & tea company. The Boosters would set up a coffee ordering system and would earn $4.00 per bag of coffee sold. This could be a great money-maker for the Boosters. We just need a volunteer to get it organized. It's not expected to be a time-consuming job. We already have a parent who has volunteered to pick up the coffee and bring it to Folsom for distribution. If interested, please contact Mary Slusser at President@FolsomMusic.org or (916) 320-8137.

Monterey Jazz Festival

Folsom came home recently with several awards from the Monterey Jazz Festival. Participation in the Festival is by invitation-only, which makes it an honor to attend and compete against the best high schools in the country. Our Jazz Choir I won a close 2nd place (by less than 1 point from the 1st place winner!) and will be back in the Fall to perform at the 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival for professional musicians. Our Jazz Band I played with excellence and placed well against several private musical schools. Kudos go out to Tanner Robinson who won an Outstanding Soloist vocal award!

In the middle school division, the groups are awarded per section. Folsom Middle School won 1st in Saxophone and Trumpet sections. Jedd Wonohadidjojo, Sutter Middle School, won an Outstanding Soloist award for guitar, and Victor Wei, Folsom Middle School, won Outstanding Soloist for saxophone. Congratulations to all of our students!

CITY OF FOLSOM WAG 'n WALK

On March 12th, the City of Folsom Parks & Recreation Department is hosting an event titled “Wag ‘n Walk” at the Willow Hill Reservoir behind Folsom High School. This event is a fun fitness walk for participants and their dog, and as an added benefit, the FHS Music Boosters receive a donation for every applicant that selects our group! This is a non-competitive 3 mile/1.5 mile/half-mile loop trail course that includes a fenced off-leash dog run area!

For more information and applications go to our website www.FolsomMusic.org or call (916) 355-7285. This event is pre-registration only - there will be NO event day registration. Don't forget to select Folsom High School Music Boosters on the application - thank you for your support!

MUSIC ROOM IN NEED OF A COPIER

The copier in the music room is living on borrowed time. Some (well most) of the parts have been discontinued for a while now and each time it breaks down, it becomes more difficult to bring it back to life. If you know of a business that has one they would be willing to donate to the Music Boosters – we are all ears!

Speaking of office products – any donations are greatly appreciated – copier paper, paper cutter, etc. Please contact Mary Slusser @ President@FolsomMusic.org with any information.

Jazz Festival Wrap-Up

The 22nd Annual Folsom Jazz Festival is now a memory. Many thanks to all the parents, students, friends and relatives who volunteered the weeks before, and day of, the Festival.

Every single volunteer position is important and contributes to a successful event. As I walked around I saw well-run venues, judges who were well taken care of, and smiling wristband checkers who must have opened doors hundreds of times welcoming guests into their venues. At the high school, where I spent my daylight hours, our food vendors had a thriving lunch business. It was pretty chilly, but the rain held off. Seeing the quad full of students, parents and other attendees enjoying an hour off eating lunch and the auditorium bulging with concert goers was quite something!

Thank you for making the Jazz Festival a success and for supporting the Folsom High School Music Boosters!

Guest Musicians - Jazz Festival

Want to know more about the fantastic musicians that will perform this year at the Folsom Jazz Festival opening concert Friday, January 28, 2011 (besides our very own students of course!) ?

Kevin Bryan is currently the lead trumpet for Harry Connick Jr., The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Bobby Sanabria Big Band and The Mambo Legends Orchestra. He has established himself as one of the most versatile musicians on the New York scene today. Whether playing powerful, dynamic lead trumpet or taking funky, down home solos, Kevin has been a welcome presence with an astonishing array of artists, including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Dianne Schurr, James Moody, Paquito D'Rivera, Brian McKnight, Michael Bolton, Patti Austin, Dave Douglas and Clark Terry. His discography includes both Grammy winners and Grammy nominees. Active on the Broadway scene as well, Kevin has performed in the orchestra of dozens of shows, including "In The Heights," "Hairspray," and "The Full Monty." As a student, he was priveleged to study with Bill Bing, Bobby Shew, Laurie Frink, and Victor Paz.

Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh's album "VerticalVoices: The Music of Maria Schneider" *(ArtistShare/2010) features Schneider's compositions for jazz orchestra using the pair's multi-tracked voices and featuring Schneider's rhythm section. The album made the short list for Grammy nominations in 2010. Inspired by the desire to perform this music live, the duo asked their talented vocalist/arranger/educator friends Jennifer Barnes and Greg Jasperse to join with them to form a vocal quartet. Here, in addition to performing music from "Vertical Voices," the quartet ventures into new artistic territory within the vocal jazz genre, utilizing wordless vocal, new composition, improvisation and more. Julia and Kerry have been great friends of our program for years, mentoring our students, teaching at Sacramento State University and writing and arranging much of our performance music.

The Sacramento Jazz Orchestra is a non-profit performing arts organization dedicated to creating and presenting authentic and engaging jazz experiences for audiences far and wide. Founded in 2009, SJO's goal is to strengthen the awareness of jazz through regional tours, public and private performances, educational programming and outreach events. The SJO performs in the form of a 18-piece big band, jazz quartet, quintet, sextet and other configurations. SJO members are full-time, professional musicians and dedicated jazz educators. Every band member represents countless hours of experience, education, and study on their instrument.
