The End to a Memorable Marching Band Season

Marching Band season went out with a bang on Saturday, November 20th with Thanksgiving dinner and a wet and wild time at the Fairfield competition.
Thanks go to Paula Hill and Mary Yasui and all the food volunteers for organizing the delicious Thanksgiving dinner for 140 students and parents. This is an unbelievable undertaking and they pulled it off without a hitch. Thanks also to Toni Carstens for another entertaining slide show and video that covered the fun and funny activities of the season. (Look for more information soon on how to purchase the Marching Band Season 2010 DVD.)

The drive to Fairfield in sheets of rain was well worth it. The skies cleared about 20 minutes before we were to take the field and the performance was fantastic. Folsom came home with the following awards:

General Effects Sweepstakes
Class A Division - First
Woodwinds Section - First
Brass Section - Second
Percussion - Third
Auxiliary (Color Guard) - Second

Congratulations to all! Our gratitude and appreciation go out to Mr. Gaesser and his staff for another memorable season.

Folsom Fall Festival Wrap-Up

What a fantastic day we had at the 7th Annual Folsom Fall Festival. Ticket sales were brisk and the stadium was full of excitement. HUGE thank you's go out to Cindy Teresi, Mr. Gaesser, Cindi Castro and the 120 volunteers who put this event together. We received several positive comments from band directors, students and attendees on the day.

Check the links below for some of the media coverage on the Festival. To quote a comment from a Sac Bee reader: "We were there last night. What a gorgeous spectacle; hundreds of wonderful teenagers, marching and playing great music and evoking gasps from the audience with their precision and discipline (and on a balmy gorgeous day)..." We couldn't have said it better ourselves!

FOOTHILL PLEASANTON REVIEW RESULTS

CONGRATULATIONS to our Marching Band and Color Guard on their award-winning performance at the Foothill Pleasanton Review. Folsom High won four awards in their respective divisions:

Field Show - 1st place
Color Guard - 2nd place
Brass Section - 2nd place
Woodwinds - 2nd place

Once again, thank you to the chaperones, food crew, uniform staff, pit crew and our teachers and staff for a great time. And to Mother Nature for holding off on the deluge of rain until we stepped off the field...literally within seconds!

Marching Band Do's and Don'ts

Here are some reminders for our marching band students as we finish out the season:

Low-cut socks are not allowed because they don't cover the leg during marching. And remember to keep extra black socks in the wardrobe bags. Our wardrobe volunteer is having to provide black socks at the last minute and gather them back up, take them home, and wash them. PLEASE CHECK YOUR BAG FOR EXTRA SOCKS AND MAKE SURE YOU'RE COVERED!

Please take care of the uniforms. We've recently repaired 40 jackets and had to replace sashes. These uniforms need to last many years and need quality care.

Please check the length of the pants. We're seeing many shorter pants but all that's needed is an adjustment of the strap at the shoulder.

All photos and videos need to be taken from the stands at the competitions, not on the field.

Students need to be patient in the food line and PICK UP AFTER THEMSELVES. At the Foothill competition, many parents were stuck picking up water bottles, etc that were just left on the ground.

Reminder: The District will not allow parents to take students to and from the competitions.

Parents - Thank you following up with your students about the above details!

2009/2010 Top Folsom High Jazz Groups Perform at Monterey Jazz Festival

Our 2009/2010 advanced jazz band and jazz choir just returned from performing (September 19, 2010) at the 53rd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, headlining Harry Connick Jr. The groups won the right to perform at the Festival after winning top awards at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival last April, a student competition sponsored by the Monterey Jazz Festival.

The Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival hosts the country's top high school jazz musicians each year who audition for a spot to compete at the professional Festival. The competition is tough! There were 48 Big Band audition submissions from 23 states, and the Next Generation Jazz Festival accepted only 12 bands. The vocal groups were just as competitive. Following their performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, some jazz students had the opportunity to spend time backstage with Harry Connick Jr.'s trumpet player. Congratulations to all!

Congratulations Mr. Zimny!

The World Drum Corps Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization honoring those individuals who have contributed significantly over many years to the development and continuing excellence in drum and bugle corps activity. Seven individuals were inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame at the group’s annual meeting in Rochester, New York on Labor Day weekend, including our very own Mr. Zimny!

Here's what you may not know about Mr. Zimny and what the Hall of Fame published about his award:

"By the time he reached the age of 50, John Zimny had been involved in drum and bugle corps activity for more than 40 years. He began playing a soprano horn with the Viscounts of McHenry, Illinois in 1956 at age eight. In 1961 the corps won the national Sons of the American Legion Championship. By the late 1960s, he was soprano soloist with Chicago Royal Airs. Following his involvement at the junior corps level, he marched as a soprano horn player with the Air Force Academy drum and bugle corps from 1968 to 1971. He later served as chief arranger for the Academy. He is best known for his work as music arranger, teacher and program co-ordinator with Sacramento Freelancers beginning in 1976 and extending through the 1990s. In the early 1970s, he was brass instructor with Des Plaines Vanguard and Ottawa Crusaders in Illinois. He taught the brass section of the Knights in 1986. In addition to his work with various drum and bugle corps, he has been a music teacher in the Folsom, California school system. Downbeat magazine named his group the best middle school jazz band in America."

Our very best wishes go out to Mr.Zimny on this fantastic achievement!

Hangman For Musicians

What’s the hardest word to solve in Hangman? If you guessed some freak of linguistics like “onomatopoeia,” “dybbuk,” or “benzodiazepine,” you’re barking up entirely the wrong arboriform growth.

Take it from Jon McLoone, Director of Business Development for Wolfram Research, the company behind popular mathematical modeling tool Mathematica. McLoone was inspired to investigate the English language’s hardest-to-guess word after his six-year-old daughter asked him how she could beat her Hangman computer game.

To find out, McLoone wrote a program that would play Hangman with all 90,000 words in the dictionary, attempting to guess each one in a semi-random way similar to a method a good human player might use. In total, he simulated some 15 million Hangman games, tying up several office PCs for a weekend in the process.

Contrary to his expectations, McLoone found that shorter words were harder to guess than longer words, and the fewer pieces you use in your Hangman drawing, the truer that gets.

And the hardest word of all? “Jazz,” which topped the rankings in all the variations of the basic game he tried!

Budget Update

Please read the following message from the Folsom High PTSA President, Donna Thompson, regarding a Budget Update:

The school district has reached a tentative agreement with the Folsom Cordova Education Association (FCEA), the union that represents the teachers, counselors, nurses, psychologists, and other certificated support staff that serve our students. If approved, this agreement has saved the middle school electives. We will know the results of the vote on May 25.

However, this agreement will not solve the cuts made to Folsom High. As of now, six teachers and two counselors have been given their pink slips. This means that we will have many classes without teachers, no Activities Director, no Athletic Director and only two counselors to serve approximately 1,900 students. What that means is we won’t have someone in charge of dances, student government, yearbook, or to organize our prominent FHS sports. Furthermore, it will be difficult for two counselors to track each student’s requirements for college – not to mention, helping with all the other daily student needs. What that means is our students won’t have the same services and opportunities as in the past. This is a BIG deal!

What you can do:
1. Check out the list of potential budget solutions and reductions (in the link below).
2. Think about other options and make suggestions to the board and district.
3. Remember SupportCAkids. They’re a good source of information in helping us get to the root of the problem…our legislature. Our state has cut funding for education for many years now. Tell them to STOP! Go to www.supportcakids.com and contact your elected officials.
4. When all is said and done and we’re back to school in August, please remember to support your school. The staff will have to work with the hand they’ve been dealt. Please be patient as they will do the best they can for your student.

To read the Superintendents full message and budget solutions and reductions, go to: www.fcusd.org/Budget

Please voice your concerns and opinions. Our district and the unions need to come together with a workable solution.

Woot Woot!!! Folsom Wins Big at Monterey Jazz Festival

Our advanced jazz groups just returned from the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival with top prizes. This Festival hosts the country's top jazz musicians who audition for a spot to compete at the Festival. The competition is tough! There were 48 Big Band audition submissions from 23 states, and the Festival accepted only 12 bands to compete. The vocal groups were just as competitive, including top LA performing arts schools.
Vocal Group Awards: Folsom High School Jazz Choir "I" took 1st place, with an Outstanding Soloist award going to senior student Nina Hadzi-Antich. Some of our students also got to participate in a clinic where they sang on stage, one-on-one, with Grammy-winning jazz singer Dianne Reeves.

Big Band Awards: Folsom High School Jazz Band "I" took 3rd place in a very close competition.

As winners, both the Jazz Choir and Jazz Band will get to play at the professional Monterey Jazz Festival, headlining Harry Connick Jr., in September.

Middle School Awards: (Finalists are not placed, just given section awards) Out of four possible Outstanding Section awards, Sutter Middle School took two, for the Saxophone and Trumpet sections.

An Outstanding Soloist award also went to Sammy Fulkerson, Folsom Middle School, for trumpet. A fun time was had by all. Congratulations to these very worthy winners!

Sonny Rollins Tickets Available

If you're looking for tickets to see Sonny Rollins at Mondavi Center in May, one of our Booster parents has them available for sale with free parking! Here's what the Mondavi Center says about the great tenor saxophone player:

"When Sonny Rollins picks up the tenor saxophone, the world listens. For more than half a century, he has played music with the majesty of a Greek god, and today remains one of the few surviving icons from a golden era of jazz that will probably never be equaled. "

The concert is Wednesday, May 19th, at 8:00 pm. The tickets are for two adults and two students, Grand Tier seating, for a total of $125.00, including a parking pass.

Please contact Dawn Ackerman if interested at (916) 985-9593 or ddga@sbcglobal.net.

Help Save Sacramento State Vocal Jazz Program

The Folsom music programs are not the only music programs currently threatened by budget cuts. There's a strong chance that Sacramento State University will eliminate Kerry Marsh's vocal jazz program next year at the University. And there's no guarantee the cuts to the University's jazz programs would stop there.

Sacramento State University had a blossoming vocal jazz program, to be sure, in 2003. But when Kerry Marsh and Julia Dollison arrived on the scene that year, they began an exciting transformation of vocal jazz study at the University. The program has grown to three vocal jazz groups. The students are learning "new, innovative approaches to contemporary vocal jazz." The Sacramento State vocal jazz groups have won numerous Downbeat awards under Marsh's direction, including several student awards for music arranging, and many of our Folsom students have gone on to study under Kerry, Julia and Steve Roach, the jazz band director.

Kerry and Julia had earlier announced that, due to the high probability that vocal jazz would be cut at the University, they had found new opportunities in Colorado and would be moving. Fortunately for us, they have decided to stay in Sacramento no matter what the outcome at Sacramento State. Their collaboration with Folsom High School over the years has been invaluable!

As you're writing your emails and letters to our school District and State legislators to save music in our Folsom schools, please add Sacramento State officials to your list and plead with them not to cut this outstanding music program and the opportunities it provides our students. Contact information for your correspondence can be found below. Links to the Sacramento State vocal jazz web page and to Kerry and Julia's latest CD featuring the music of Maria Schneider (getting rave reviews!) are also provided.

Congratulations Mr. Wersky on Distinguished Service Award

On February 20, 2010, Don Wersky received the Distinguished Service Award by the California Band Directors Association. According to Meryl Wamhoff, General Manager of the Delta Center for the Arts and a Board member for CBDA:

"This recognition is one of the highest honors in the music teaching profession. Mr. Wersky has served on the executive board of the California Band Directors Association (CBDA) for more than ten years and has committed more than thirty years of his life to teaching public school music. His service to the State's students and the music teaching profession were deemed invaluable by the membership of CBDA."

The award was presented during the annual CBDA convention banquet. CBDA is the State's professional organization of band directors. Don has been a teacher and friend of the Folsom middle schools and the high school music program for many years. From all the Booster parents and students whose lives you've touched, Congratulations Don!!!!

CALL TO ACTION - UPDATED

Dear Booster Parents:

Thank you to all the students and parents that showed their support at the District Meeting earlier this month. As evidenced by the front-page headline in the Telegraph, our students' and parents' voices were heard.

Our next step? We must move our efforts to the legislative level and demand a priority be placed on education! Let’s empower ourselves and our students to take charge!

Where to start? I encourage our students, our parents, our teachers to rally together and let our legislators know we are disappointed in the lack of concern for our children, our schools, and the future of California. http://www.supportcakids.com/ is your resource to look up your legislator, sample letters to write to your legislator, latest budget updates and important news relating to our California schools.

What can you do? Attend one of the local Support CA Kids Community Meetings:

Tuesday, March 23 at Folsom Middle School (Multi) 6:00-7:30
Thursday, March 25 at Mitchell Middle School (Multi) 6:00-7:30

We need everyone to get involved to make a difference in the lives of our children today, before it’s too late.

Folsom High School Music Boosters

Jazz Band I to Perform This Thursday

The Music Never Stops Foundation will be hosting a Winter Jazz Series event this Thursday featuring our Jazz Band I. This Foundation was formed after "members of the Sacramento community, including a director of a local music school, parents of music students and adult music students became increasingly aware of the need to assist young and talented music students so that a lack of funding was not a barrier to a young student's continued music education."

The concert will include a jam session with any musician who signs in at the door. Here are the details:

CALL TO ACTION

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE FROM LORIE WALTON, FOLSOM HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC BOOSTERS PRESIDENT:

I am encouraging all students, parents and alumni to attend the FCUDS School Board Meeting on Thursday, March 4th currently scheduled at Folsom High School at 6:00 pm. Due to the expected turn out for this meeting, it is likely to be moved from the library to the multi – refer to the Folsom Cordova Unified School District website for up to date details and agenda. (Fcusd.k12.ca.us/BoardWeb/bdCalendar.htm)

The proposed budget reductions threaten the elimination of middle school electives which impacts the music programs for our students. It is my understanding there will be little or no time allotted for the public to speak on agenda items. If this is correct, actions will have to speak louder than words. Our students have been asked to attend this meeting and to wear all black.

What: School Board Meeting
Where: Folsom High School
Date: Thursday, March 4th
Time: 6:00 pm (show up by 5:45 pm)
Cause: Save Middle School Electives
Attire: All Black

Please remember this is a supportive effort to remind the FCUSD School Board that music matters. The Board is facing extreme sacrificial decisions that conflict with their personal choices. Let’s work with the School Board to find alternative choices. Sacrificing music education today will have a negative impact on our children’s future. Please join us to save our middle school electives in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District.

Sincerely,

Lorie Walton, President
Folsom High School Music Boosters

Jazz Festival 2010 Wrap-Up

A HUGE thank you to all volunteers who played a part in the 2010 Folsom Jazz Festival. Our festival is known as the premier festival in Northern California and there's a reason for that...the hard work and dedication of our music staff and tremendous parent and student volunteers. Special thanks to Natalie Marhauer and her lead committee for their tireless efforts.

The festival was attended by over 130 schools. We had to turn schools away because we didn't have enough performance time. And our students made a favorable impression on all. Following the Friday night concert featuring the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band, Steve Wiest, their Grammy-nominated conductor, said that we have an amazing program here in our own little corner of the world that should never be taken for granted. Steve went on to say that the Folsom High School Jazz Band I that performed that evening was better than 35 of the 40 all-star college bands he has mentored in his clinics over the last few years.
